Breaches and other-world ambushes

A failed operation can bring a threat back to Gravesend.

01 / Conflict

The breach trigger

When Cortex participates in a live off-world operation and loses to an NPC antagonist faction there is a 25 percent chance of a breach. For the next real hour eligible movement through Gravesend has a five percent chance per move to produce one monster from that world.

Roads and building interiors can be affected. A breach produces at most one encounter. It prefers a suitable monster level and falls back to the weakest available local template. The monster stays at the ambush location. A pending breach expires on restart.

02 / Conflict

A separate danger abroad

Cortex members moving through dangerous rooms of the Other or Wilds or Godrealm or Hell have a separate five percent ambush chance on eligible moves. The character must be active and unshrouded and outside combat and battlegrounds and hunting patrols. Existing spawned-monster cooldowns prevent immediate repeat spawns.

That encounter contains one to the smaller of four or tier plus one creatures. Their selection and combat strength depend on the world and randomized difficulty as well as tier. The normal twelve-tick cooldown applies and attackers expire after twelve ticks.

03 / Conflict

Sanctuary is not a rescue promise

Forest-monster and explicitly identified ambush or lair incidents have recovery exclusions. Check the relevant encounter and protection rules before assuming every death on a town map will be reversed.
